I'm finally in New York City! I'm so ridiculously excited :)
It was pretty hard leaving home. Knowing that I would only be gone for five weeks, instead of ten like last summer, helped a lot. I spent most of the morning feeling really nervous, but once we got into the city, I was so excited!
Our housing...well, I'm not sure what can be said. Last year in Vail I was living in a condo that was at least a million dollars, so its hard not to compare it to this year. Our dorms are so small. I dont think you can really even imagine just how small they are. They make UConn dorms look like luxury suites. I'm sure the frustrations everyone is having over how dumpy our building is will ease once we get used to living here. We all joked that our basement is called the Chamber of Death and that we'll probably find a couple dead bodies hidden in this building. But, like I said, once we get used to it, it'll be fine.
We spent some time walking around the city, and we got to see our studio. The studio where we'll be staying is awesome! I'm so excited to be working there for a majority of the time. Seriously...I saw our schedule and there is so much time devoted to being in the studio. Sometimes I think knowing that we won't be spending much time in the dorms makes me less bitter about our living situation.
We've also had one big group meeting of all the NYC Tribeca Tracks (Inner-City, Campus, Epic, and Arts). It was nice to see how many students are going to be in the city with us for a couple weeks. I've been able to spend time with some people, and we definitely have a good group! I'm excited to get to know everybody!
Tomorrow we're going to learn how to avoid death on the subways and be able to navigate through the city. Then we have a couple of hours to just venture out and go exploring. After we're done with that we should be doing something exciting...who knows what? I'm really just looking forward to doing things that are unique to New York (there's already been promise of a broadway play!!!!) and just seeing God work in the city as well. I'm also really excited to be working with an illustrator, spending time in an actual New York studio, and seeing how other students on this trip are able to share their faith through the gifts that God has given them!
Well, I think that's really all there is to say about my first night here. I'll be sure to keep you all updated every now and then about how life is treating me. Be sure to keep me updated on your lives as well ;)
